Unemployed MBAs are becoming entrepreneurs

Imagine that you just graduated from business school: you worked hard for your MBA and applied for countless jobs - yet, you're still unemployed. What would you do? Would you become an entrepreneur?

According to BusinessWeek staff writer Alison Damast, many recent MBAs are doing just that. However, Damast is careful to note that the current state of the economy is making it difficult for MBA's to make their dreams a reality. Still, despite the lack of available capital, there is a bit of hope, as several b-schools are modifying their curriculum to better educate their growing numbers of entrepreneur-hopefuls and some companies are sponsoring business plan competitions.

Damast quotes the director of the Entrepreneurial Management Center at San Diego State's College of Business, Bernhard Schroeder: "Students are looking out over the horizon and saying, 'You know what, there may be no job waiting for me when I graduate.' This recession is showing them that they can't trust anyone with their career."
