Trying to get keep track of your daily e-mails may be a struggle, but there are some things you can do to make sure that your e-mails are read by the recipient and answered properly. The first thing is to always add a subject line, never leave it blank. This one line is used to grab the reader’s attention, notifying them of the information in the e-mail.

Because e-mail is also very cost effective, if you have several points to discuss write a separate e-mail for each topic. Keeping the topics clear and concise will encourage a quick reply. Make sure you specify if a follow up either by e-mail, or phone is necessary and also include all of your contact information to guarantee you will receive the follow up.

With the 4th of July right around the corner, while you are making plans whether they are far away or closer to home be sure to take care of your car during these summer months. Taking special care of your tires is even more important in warmer weather because of the long trips, heavy loads, and high speeds put more stress on your tires than usual. Check your tires regularly for signs of damage, and make sure they are properly inflated to the correct tire pressure. Never overload your vehicle, and make sure that you do not travel at a high rate of speed for a long time, traveling at a lower speed also means better gas mileage!!

When people hear the word outsourcing it is usually directed to the field of information technology.

Previous blog posts have touched on the idea that although jobs are being outsourced to other countries, one would assume that domestic IT jobs would be scarce. But this is not the case, it seems as though the need for IT positions will continue to grow, and that IT is still an in demand industry here in the states. In fact, the 100 best companies to work for IT in the year 2008 can be found by clicking here.

When you are set in your job, it is very easy to forget that at some point you may need to look for another job. That is why it is intensely important to keep your resume updated with all of your most recent accomplishments and marketable skills. You never know where the road will lead you. If you do not keep up with adding awards, promotions, and accomplishments to your resume as they come, you may not remember them when looking for a new position and distributing your resume to possible employers.

The New York Times reports that high tech jobs in software, computer design, and the internet are becoming vacant all over the United States because American schools are not producing a sufficient number of graduates capable of filling these positions. Because of this, an enormous number of high tech jobs are being lost to other countries.
Reason being that for such a decrease in high tech jobs being filled is because the federal government is not issuing enough green cards or visas to students already studying here, so they are returning to their home countries. The solution posed by the Times is to increase the number of visas for foreign technology industry workers in order for the US to stay on the cutting age of technology. What else can be done to fill the technology job vacancies in the US?

The summer months are upon us, and more of us will be outside enjoying the nice weather and sunshine. However, too much sun can be a bad thing when it results in a sunburn. Sun exposure causes up to 90% of premature aging, and skin diseases as well as various types of cancer.

Some of the best ways to avoid a sunburn start with applying sunscreen 30 minutes before going out in the sun, and reapplying it every 1-2 hours. Another step is to wear protective clothing such as a wide brimmed hat, long skirts or pants to cover legs, and shirts with sleeves when you are going to be in the sun for long periods of time. Also, limit time in the between the hours of 10am and 3 pm when the sun is its strongest.

Using personal e-mail...while at work

Some employers restrict, or blatantly prohibit the use of personal e-mail in the workplace. Is this a detriment to an employee obtaining a healthy work/life balance? Some people feel that blocking access to websites at work could backfire. This could reduce job satisfaction and productivity while others feel the opposite, that work computers should be used strictly for work purposes in order to increase productivity. Although many feel that a personal e-mail here and there is not a bad thing, e-mail has a way of taking on a life its own. Therefore, it is important to know your employers policy on personal e-mails, and if personal e-mails are allowed be sure to limit them to a reasonable amount of time.

"Blackle.com - Saving energy one search at a time".

Blackle.com was created in 2007 after another blog mentioned in its title that if the background of the Google search engine were black it would save energy because of the popularity of the search engine itself. The screen is set to load as black because more energy is used to produce a screen that is white or a lighter color. We can all take small steps to save energy; change your homepage to Blackle.com to do yours today!

Commit yourself to constant improvement. There will always be a better more efficient way of doing things. Be the person that is always looking to improve rather than settling with what might be just comfortable. Be the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.

Now that summers here you probably want to relax and be care free you want to stop thinking about the next year, sit back on the beach chair and rest! But you don't really know how to get started.

More and more people have been found to be falling asleep at work. Sure, it is good for a good laugh every once in awhile, but worker’s lack of sleep is causing some companies billions in lost productivity, and increased absenteeism. Some companies in an effort to combat the effects of tired employees have offered workers nap rooms. So what can you do to cut down on being tired at work? Have a before bed routine, a cool bedroom, and avoid caffeine after lunch.

Having a good memory is good for your career. Making presentations without note cards, learning and remembering the names and positions of colleagues is also key; however, our memories are not always reliable so here are some tips that can be used to help.

Quickly repeating new information such as someone’s name upon meeting them can be used to help your short term memory.

To improve long term memory pay extra attention to what you need to remember, give it meaning, repeat it and even use a little creativity to relate it to something else that will “trigger” your memory.

Economic success is clearly the biggest and best business motivation there is. But what motivates the people that make the business, a business?

Profit, growth and sustainability are terms that describe a healthy business, and these are the same terms that are required by employees to create successful businesses. Unless employees are inspired and rewarded properly, no business would be capable of financial success.

So why not start with teamwork? Working with a team gives you the support, to reach your full potential, and when you’re at your best you are doing your best work.

Work. Not somewhere you go, but something you do. An interesting article about the new approach to work at Best Buy has me thinking, that this could help a lot of people go about their day to day business but with a little more flexibility and less stress.

Best Buy uses the acronym ROWE or Results-Only Work Environment, to increase the efficiency of their workers. This theory evolved out of the concept of the worker being able to exercise the freedom of doing whatever they want, whenever they want, as long as the work gets done. This means the order of tasks completed is up to the worker, and the time they arrive or leave work as long as they finish their work by the deadline.

Organizers of ROWE at Best Buy believe that this could work in both small and large companies…to read the article click here.

According to CNN.com, researchers in an undisclosed but otherwise “industrialized nation” outside of the United States used cell phone towers to track tens of thousands individuals' locations whenever they made or received phone calls and text messages over six months. According to the FCC this type of nonconsensual tracking would be illegal in the U.S., but nonetheless this is a step for science and studying human behavior through the use of new technology. If this technology was ever made legal in the U.S. or in other countries it could help with the design of better transportation systems and give doctors guidance in fighting the spread of contagious diseases.

Wake up and see the possibilities!!

Are you doing yourself a disservice by only searching for what you believe to be the “perfect job”? What does that even mean the perfect job? Focusing your job search is one of the most important steps, but being too overzealous and applying to every job posting is just as bad as having too narrow of a job scope. Approaching a job hunt with a predetermined mindset that is unwilling to accept anything less than the precise job title, pay, and hours wanted means you could be setting yourself up for disappointment. See what other amazing possibilities are out there!

Management involves planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling organizational resources. Leadership involves applying influence skills to achieve a common goal and creating change. However, we all have our different views of what leadership is and what management is. The question is do you need to be a good leader to be a good manager? And does a leader need to have good management skills to be a good leader? What are your thoughts, feel free to weigh in!

Gearing up for the week ahead!

Tomorrow is Monday! What better way to start you week off then going in to it with a positive mindset. Enjoy some quiet time and a cup or tea, or coffee. Here are some things to keep in mind throughout the week whether it be at work or at home.

1. No one can ruin your day without your permission.
2. The best way to escape problems, is to solve them.
3. Life is a journey, not a destination so enjoy the trip.
4. Success stops, but only when you do!
5. Breathe.
