
The overwhelming popularity of and easy access to social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, can make it difficult for managers to establish corporate guidelines regarding their use. Joshua-Michéle Ross, VP of O'Reilly Radar offers some tips:
- When it comes to the social networking activity, "lead by example."
- "Build your policies around job performance not fuzzy concerns about productivity:" if you expect your employees to be check their office e-mail after work, you can't ask them not to check their Facebook or Twitter during work.
- Encourage employees to use social sites to connect with each other and clients.
- Allow employees to access sites that discuss your products and/or services.
