Whiteacre: GM's new chairman

According to an article by David Welch (BusinessWeek), General Motors has announced Edward E. Whitacre, Jr. as its new chairman. Welch states that Whiteacre's appointment "show[s] that the company is ditching anyone who might favor business as usual."

Notably, Whiteacre is the former Chairman and CEO of AT&T, and it is for this reason that his appointment may very well be indicative of the changes to come.  Although he certainly has the leadership experience to lead a large company, like GM, Whiteacre is from another industry entirely.

While I understand and appreciate the importance of leaders who can work outside BAU (business as usual), I have to wonder how far beyond its boundaries is a company supposed to go to find these people?  How much of an effect - either positive or negative - will Whiteacre's inexperience with the auto industry have on what he achieves with GM?
