Finding your work/life balance

Maintaining a work/life balance has always been a challenge, but now, as many people are working longer hours to avoid losing their jobs, it has become more difficult than ever.

Tara Weiss, of Forbes, offers 10 simple steps toward finding your balance:

1. Identifying your personal and career priorities will help outline a clear path of action.
2. "Edit Yourself Personally and Professionally" by stepping down from boards, committees, groups, etc. that you aren't truly interested in and/or can't give 100% to.
3. Get to know company policies in regards to flexibility. What you find (i.e. telecommuting options) may pleasantly surprise you!
4. Build a strong support system of family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. These people will be there to not only help celebrate your triumphs but also console you in your losses and offer advice. Having a support system means that you'll be part of other people's support systems as well, and being there for them when they need you is its own type of reward.
5. "Establish clear communication with your colleagues and your boss."
6. "Make certain times, like dinner, are technology-free for you and your family."
7. If it's appropriate for your project and position, try to telecommute, even if it is only for a day or two each month. By eliminating your commute, "you'll be able to focus on work for long stretches and to use the extra hours in the day to meet personal responsibilities."
8. Ask someone with a good work/life balance for advice on how to improve yours.
9. Think small and make a list of short-term, attainable goals that will help you attain your long-term goal of balance.
10. Even if it would only be a temporary basis, ask your boss to telecommute or for a more flexible work schedule.
