The relationship between needs, rewards and motivation is one of interdependence. A person’s need arises out of the desire to fulfill a void. Whether it is a desire to fulfill the need of money, relationships, recognition or achievement there is void that requires a need. Motivation is what drives the action to perform the necessary steps to accomplish the need, and a reward is the result of accomplishing the need. The rewards can be either intrinsic in the feeling of accomplishment of performing the process that led to fulfilling the need, extrinsic rewards those given by a supervisor such as promotion or raise, and lastly system wide rewards are one that because of your work benefit the entire organization.
