It is always important to demonstrate why you are vital to your company. This is intensely important during tough economic times. In order to do this, make sure you are able to work and develop a certain skill or expertise so that when people have questions, they go to you. This makes you an essential member of the team because you are the only one that possesses that knowledge. By becoming the go to person for you department other people will rely on you for advice, and if you weren’t there perhaps questions wouldn’t be answered as effective or efficiently.
